Tripped Out travel zine tagline: The Outsider's Guide To Travel

What’s Tripped Out?

The world’s a big place. Through my work as a music journalist, I’ve been lucky enough to see a fair bit of it.

In many cities though, I wish I’d had a friend to show me the best local spots for a cold beer, a decent record store and perhaps point me in the direction of the best meal I’ve never had.

Even better, I wish I’d had a friend who could explain the stories behind the local music and art, the madness behind the politics and architecture …and someone to tell me not to walk through the part of town called ‘Cracolandia’. Jesus wept.

I hope this zine can be that friend.

Tripped Out! - São Paulo
£5.00

I know you don’t NEED a guide to São Paulo BUT this isn’t Lonely Planet, I promise. Tripped Out! is a first person account of the best – and the worst – that the city’s subculture has to offer.

From windowless dive bars with knife-carrying clientele, to record stores run by heavy metal legends.

Experience the heaving markets, curb-side restaurants and gigantic sandwiches of Brazil’s biggest city.

Take an eye-popping trip through the worst part of town. Watch a high-stakes election in an LGBTQ+ bar with everything to lose. And get driven out of a Japanese restaurant at 4AM by some drunk guy singing Purple Rain.

This is a snapshot of one of the most vibrant, endearing and shocking places on Earth. An outsider’s guide to São Paulo.

‘Elsewhere in the city I visit a blissfully no-frills bar.

It’s only after a couple of beers I notice that the guy on the stool next to me is using the edge of the bar top to sharpen an uncomfortably large knife.

What can I say?

The streets here are tough.’

Listen!

To accompany the zine, I made a Spotify playlist of some of the tunes encountered in São Paulo. It contains everything from samba to punk, jazz to grindcore. It’s quite a ride. Enjoy.
